What is Karate ?
Karate meaning empty hand is a traditional & formal martial art which consists of a variety of techniques using hands, feet, elbows & knees by means of defending oneself in unprovoked attacks. Karate is used in developement of mind & body using sequences of techniques called kata & the practice of basic techniques & complex combinations. Karate is a philosophy emphasizing humility, self discipline & self growth with the aim of self enlightenment.What style of karate do you teach ?
We teach Wado-Ryu Karate which was founded by Hironori Ohtsuka in the early 20th
century and is a synthesis of Okinawan Karate-do and Japanese Budo arts.
Hironori Ohtsuka was a Jujitsu master when he first began learing Karate from
Karate giants such as Gichin Funakoshi, Kenwa Mabuni and Choki Motobu. From the
teachings of these great men he created the core Kata of Wado-Ryu, and created
Kumite techniques based on both these Kata and the Jujitsu techniques of which
he had mastered.
Wado-Ryu is famous for its speed, and body-shifting techniques. It
enphasises the importance of evasion particularly when facing an armed
opponent. Wado-Ryu Karate can not be mastered without learning to move in a
natural manner.
It is this emphasis on the natural movement of the human body that separates
Wado-Ryu from many other Karate styles that rely on muscular power rather than
scientific principles.
How much does it cost to train at Shogun Black Belt Academy ?
Our costs remain highly competitive, you pay for the lessons you attend & you do not have to commit to an expensive monthly contract. Compared to most sports Martial Arts is an inexpensive option.
What should i wear to my first lesson ?
A T-Shirt & light jogging bottoms or a tracksuit. At our after school groups a PE kit is ideal. Martial Arts uniforms are available from your instructor should you choose to purchase one.
Our lessons consist of training methods that will improve co-ordination skills, self discipline, increased concentration & awareness. Your child will also benefit from our warm ups & training drills that improve physical fitness. Karate will also give your child a level of self confidence that will help them achieve their goals at home & at school.
Many parents worry that karate will make
their children overly aggressive. On the contrary, karate is taught to only be
used for self-defence.
Our students learn to respect the ability that they have, to know that the only appropriate place for karate is at the karate club, practicing at home, or in a self-defence situation.
How will i as an adult member benefit from training at your academy ?
Apart from gaining a higher level of fitness our classes also teach self defence techniques that will improve your ability to protect yourself in a violent situation should this ever occur.

Apart from your kit & training fee you may want to bring a drink for refreshment during & after the class. Half way through our childrens classes we have a two minute break for refreshment, we do this as it is a known fact children dehydrate far faster than adults.
